The Season That Prepared Me for Everything

June 30, 20264 min read

I can still see that little room in my mind. We were living in my in-laws' basement, and everything we owned fit into one open space—our beds lined the walls, a dresser tucked into the corner, a couch facing the TV with very little walking space between it all.

I was pregnant with our third baby, my husband was unemployed, and we had a four-year-old and a one-year-old at home. Every day felt like I was just trying to keep our heads above water.

I wanted so badly to help improve our situation, but I couldn't figure out how.

I couldn't just go get a full-time job. Childcare would have cost more than I would have made, and who was going to hire someone with maternity leave just around the corner? I couldn’t go back to school overnight. I couldn't wave a magic wand and fix our finances or make life easier.

For the first time in my life, I felt completely powerless.

You spend your days changing diapers, making meals, folding laundry, wiping noses, cleaning up messes, and trying to remember the last time you sat down long enough to actually finish a meal. When you're in the thick of raising little kids, it's easy to wonder, Is this it?

I remember asking myself, What can I even do right now? Then one day, I had a simple realization that changed the direction of my life. Maybe I couldn't change my circumstances overnight... But I could change myself.

That thought became my lifeline.

I started reading personal development books whenever I had a few quiet minutes. I listened to podcasts while I folded laundry or washed dishes. I watched motivational videos during nap time. I learned about habits, confidence, psychology, leadership, and the way successful people think.

I wasn't building a business or changing the world. I was simply becoming someone different.

But here's what surprised me.

Almost everything I found in the personal development world seemed to be written for people who had plenty of time, were only responsible for themselves, and could do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted.

Wake up at 5:00 a.m. Meditate for an hour. Go to the gym every morning. Read two books a week. Network. Travel. Start a side hustle.

I remember thinking... Clearly these people have never had a toddler following them into the bathroom. The advice itself wasn't bad. It just wasn't written for moms like me. So I started adapting it.

Instead of reading entire chapters, I read a few pages. Instead of long morning routines, I spent five quiet minutes reflecting during nap time. Instead of making huge changes, I focused on tiny ones. And over time, I realized something incredibly important.

Personal growth for moms looks different.

Sometimes growth is learning to be more patient. Sometimes it's choosing encouragement instead of self-criticism. Sometimes it's taking one online class. Sometimes it's saving twenty dollars instead of spending it. Sometimes it's writing down one dream you've been too afraid to say out loud.

None of those things seem very impressive.

But together?

They're building someone.

At the time, I had no idea where those little choices were leading.

I didn't know they were preparing me to finish my college degree or preparing me to start Mom of the Castle. I didn't know they were preparing me to help other moms discover their own worth and build lives they truly love.

Looking back now, I can see that I wasn't standing still all those years.

I was getting ready.

And maybe that's exactly what's happening in your life too.

If you're in a season where your children need you every minute of the day... If money feels tight... If your dreams feel like they've been put on a shelf... If you've started wondering whether you'll ever get the chance to become the woman you want to be...

I hope you'll hear this.

This season isn't wasting your potential. It may actually be preparing it.

You know what I love about castles? They don't begin with beautiful towers. They begin with a foundation. Stone by stone. Layer by layer. For a long time, it doesn't even look like much is happening. The most important work is happening where no one can see it.

I think motherhood is a lot like that.

The patience you're developing. The resilience you're building. The confidence you're slowly growing. The wisdom you're gaining.

Those aren't small things.

They're becoming the foundation for the life you'll build later.

Maybe today isn't the day you launch the business, go back to school, or change your family's financial future.

But today might be the day you become a little wiser. A little stronger. A little braver. And those small investments in yourself matter more than you realize.

One day, you'll look back and see that the woman you needed to become wasn't created all at once. She was built one ordinary Tuesday at a time.

If you've been feeling powerless lately, I want you to know something.

You are not standing still. You are becoming.

And when the time is right, you'll be amazed at what you've quietly been preparing yourself to do.
